Beat or Bet 有倒未為輸

a media+live performance @ The 2nd Macau International Performance Art Festival,
Macau, 20-21/10/2007

"The world today is undergoing extensive and profound changes, and contemporary China is going through a wide-ranging and deep-going transformation. This brings us unprecedented opportunities as well as unprecedented challenges, with the former outweighing the latter." said President Hu Jintao at the 17th National Congress of People's Republic of China.

In an international performance art festival in Macau, I presented a performance which was inspired by unprecedented blooming of gambling industry which benefits its economic growth and tourism in Macau.

While a video mixed with speech by President Hu Jintao at the 17th National Congress of People's Republic of China, TV commercials of Macau's casinos and people's protests there was shown, I covered "HK" with gold-colour stickers on my T-shirt.

The performance turns out to be a coin tossing game with members of the audience who have to guess heads and tails. To my surprise, all the Macau audience won the bet and was offered the golden coin of chocolate -- after they finished the chocolate, I fixed the golden shells of the coin on their eyes with sticking tape. As the president's speeches in the video gradually repeated and overlay, I blinded myself with the golden coin too and marching out the artspace with the 5-star national flag waved in my hands.

In face of the rapid growth in economy and of fast-changing social development, how can we find our way and our core value? To beat or to bet, that's the question.
