聽寫王釋法 TengSeWong/VoiceWriter on Basic Law |
|||||
a live performance with video Para/Site Art Space, Hong Kong 23/04/2005 |

Right after the government
seeking a third interpretation of Basic Law by the National People's Congress
on the appropriate term of the next chief executive, I produce a DIY version
of my own Basic Law. Basic Law is supposed
to be a symbol of the autonomy and one-country-two-system policy in Hong
Kong after the sovereignty handover in 1997. However, controversy has
arisen over several Basic Law interpretation in the last few years. After
all, what does Basic Law means to us, the Hong Kong people, indeed?
Using the computer software TengSeWong/Voice-writer,
I made a new copy of Basic Law. Several chapters related to the appointment
of Hong Kong’s chief executive was turned into computer-generated speech
in Mandarin and was transcribed by the software to text. Due to the
language differences, text transcribed by the Vocal-writer would be
very different from original speech. For example, the speech of '香港特別行政區基本法'
(Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Basic Law) in Mandarin was
transcribed to '角鐵選取義肢黐筋自白' (triangular-iron-select-prosthesis- idiotic-avowal)
by the software’s automatic word association function. Sentences are
often made by individual colloquial phrases but do not make sense literally
as a whole. |

In the performance, I was sitting at the centre of the gallery reading the DIY Basic Law while putting pieces by pieces of raw cane sugar cube into my mouth. Video of the original text of Basic Law was projected on me with the Mandarin speech. The DIY Basic Law was as tough as the sugar coagulated in my mouth and I was finally drowned in the gradual loud voice of the original Basic Law in Mandarin with sugar thrown up on my long white dress. | |||||
