'on the Tao' is a serial project in search of the 'Tao' of digital media. The 'Tao' is an influential Chinese philosophy found in traditional Chinese arts. It can be viewed as a way of tracing my cultural roots while applying these ideas to the up-and-coming art form that is digital media. It is also a product of the culture clashes that I have experienced during recent years while living and travelling in different countries...
I initiated this serial project when I started working with digital media and surprisingly found a link to Chinese philosophy and aesthetics. The non-linearity, virtuality and convergence of digital media recall my experience of viewing and doing Chinese art such as paintings and calligraphy.
For me, the act of viewing and making a piece of traditional Chinese art is a process of meditation where one can enjoy a harmony of the universe by entering the virtual world of figurative images. This aesthetic can be traced back to the influential writings of the Chinese philosopher Chuang Tzu (莊子) (369-286 BC) about 'Tao' (道), which literally means a way or path in Chinese and refers to a dialectic philosophy seeking 'oneness' with the great or eternal universe by forgetting our world of differences...
