Some may call it the commons; some may call it their property. And Hong Kong’s land is the most precious among other Asian countries.
West Kowloon Cultural District, built on the 40-hectares reclamation from the Harbour, is one of the most precious land by the waterfront — precious not only because of the price of the very few available waterfront land in town, but also of the imagined value of high art and culture. This makes WKCD and M+ separate from ordinary life in most people’s mind.
This performance project teases about the unaffordable land price in Hong Kong and seeks to (re)engage the public in art in an imaginative way. While the participants were prepared and spectulating on the auctioned items, the auction, after all, had never took place abruptly as M+ strongly dissuaded. What is the commons for a public institution and how can “art” be an imaginative platform for civic engagement?
A drop in the ocean makes ripples; more drops make the mighty ocean. This was the launching project of the A Drop and Two Dots initiative convened by wen yau; A Drop and Two Dots aims to strengthen the civil society in Hong Kong through the arts.
