a media+live performance @ "Eight Areas" Performance Art
Exchange Exhibition,
K Gallery, Chengdu, Szechwan, China, 26/5/2007
Invited
by a Chinese performance art exhibition in Chengdu, I presented
the first work of this series expressing my confused feelings about
my attachment to China and to other people in the country (or "comrades"
which is often used in mainland China)
A
pre-edited video of the 1997 Handover ceremony was played on a TV.
Following the rite of national anthems and flag replacement as shown
on the video, I tried to repeat the speech of the former Chinese
President Jiang Zemin who announced the establishment of Hong Kong
Special Administration Region of People's Republic of China. As
a Cantonese speaker, it was so hard for me to follow what President
Jiang said in Putonghua and therefore could only repeat some broken
phrases that I understood. Later on, when the video blends into
a ceremony of the arrival of 2 pandas from Szechwan to Hong Kong,
I moved to the audience and sewed my heart on the
T-shirt to their clothes one by one with a red thread. At the end,
a group of people was connected with me although some others had
dropped off with a broken thread.
Contrary to my superficial and detached connection
to them, the audience in Szechwan were so sensationalised by their
strong sense of nationalism that they did not realize they have
cut off the red thread themselves after my performance finished.
Are they connected to my heart indeed?
